Hi! It’s been a while, hasn’t it? This is the obligatory ‘life got in the way for a bit’ update where I’m here to tell you: life got in the way for a bit. The good news is that chapter 3: Found Family Realness is mostly scripted and I’ll start updating again this spring. The other good news is that chapter 1+2 (which is all the comics so far) are now available as a full color comic book! This update I’m telling you about all the cool shenanigans.
Practical Magic Shenanigans print release
Although I love the convenience of a comic newsletter that I can update as I go, I always wanted more. Once chapter 1 & 2 were complete, I started playing around with the idea of an actual comic book. Getting a publisher might be a step too far (…for now) , so self-publishing it was! Luckily I had experience with creating print magazines and a small budget, so by the end of December a box full of comics was delivered to my door…
Print details:
– all comics from chapter 1 ‘Remember to Smile’ and chapter 2 ‘Welcome to Hell Retail Service’ (with updated colors and lettering for print clarity)
– 48 full color pages
– a bonus updated digital not-so-lo-fi-witch mixtape
– a very shiny cover with rounded corners
- priced on a sliding scale from 10-15 euros, pay what you can
Now, in full technicolor magic!
The comic will always remain available online. However, if you like print comic books and queer zines (or if you have friends who do), you can buy it in my webshop now.
But wait, there’s more (prints)!
This illustration is called Broken Windows and Minor Hauntings. Yes I did watch the new Wednesday series right when I was drawing this and yes I do love stained glass. It’s the cover illustration for the comic book, but I liked it so much I also made it available as a 29,7x42 cm illustration, in a shiny and a matte edition. I also did a small screenprint run of the cover illustration for chapter 1: remember to smile. Did I ever tell you I’m a printmaker? If not, now you know.
Final promo message
Want to see more of my stuff or stay updated about what’s happening inbetween comic posts? Here’s where you can find me:

If you like the comics and want to (and can) support me financially, you can do that by buying something. A free way to help is sharing this newsletter and/or my prints with your friends. To be honest, I’m awkward about promotional things so I’m leaving it there for now.
Comic updates: Chapter 3 coming to you this spring!
Print promo is over, time to get back to the comic. It’s spring time baby! Chapter 3 will be called Found Family Realness. It’s low on plot, but the vibe is wholesome. Here are some comic titles from my drafting document to tide you over until it starts:
And finally…
Thank you for sticking around. Practical Magic Shenanigans is one of my favorite things to work on. I went into this comic project with a target audience of one (me), drawing the stories that I wasn’t seeing enough of and that would make me happy. It’s been nice to see that more people are into queer witches and thrift store anecdotes. Every form of feedback, whether you subscribe, like, buy, or tell me to my face gives me joy. Hopefully we continue to entertain each other with these shenanigans.
See you next time,
Marieke
